Looking for a simple and practical sewing project? In this tutorial, I'll show you how to make a box pencil case with a zipper and lining. It's a fun project that you can make for yourself, for school, or as a handmade gift.

This pencil case has a nice boxy shape, plenty of room for pens and pencils, and a cute little bow on the zipper for the final touch. 🎀

The best part? The sewing pattern is completely free to download!

Free Box Pencil Case Pattern

You can download the free printable pattern for this project below:

The pattern is designed to be printed on A4 paper. Make sure your printer is set to 100% / Actual Size when printing.

Materials

For this project, you'll need:

  • Outer fabric

  • Lining fabric

  • Interfacing

  • A zipper

  • A small piece of fabric for the bow

  • Sewing thread

  • Sewing machine

  • Fabric scissors

  • Pins or sewing clips

  • Iron

  • Ruler

  • The free pattern

Cutting the Fabric

Download and print the free pattern, then cut all the fabric pieces according to the measurements.

I recommend using a medium-weight cotton fabric for the outer fabric and a lightweight cotton fabric for the lining.

For a more structured pencil case, don't skip the interfacing. It helps the pouch keep its shape and gives it a more professional finish.

How to Sew the Box Pencil Case

1. Prepare the fabric

Cut all the fabric pieces and fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of the outer fabric.

2. Add the tag

Mark the center of the panel and measure down from the top edge. Position your tag and topstitch it in place.

3. Attach the zipper

Place the zipper with the fabric and sew it in place. For the best results, use a zipper foot.

Take your time with this step and make sure the zipper stays straight.

4. Attach the lining

Place the lining fabric, match the edges carefully, and sew along the existing stitch line.

Repeat the same process for the other side.

5. Sew the pouch

Fold the pieces right sides together and pin everything in place.

Mark the opening in the middle that you'll use for turning later.

Sew along both sides and sew the lining closed, leaving the opening for turning.

6. Create the boxed corners

For the boxed corners, fold the openings straight across on both the lining and outer fabric.

Sew a straight line with a 0.7 cm seam allowance.

Repeat the same steps for all three corners.

It can be a little tricky, but a little patience goes a long way!

7. Turn the pencil pouch

Once all the corners are finished, turn the pencil pouch right side out.

Check that everything is sewn neatly. Once you're happy with the result, turn it back inside out if needed to finish the remaining steps.

8. Make the bow

Place both bow pieces right sides together and sew all the way around, leaving a small opening for turning.

Trim the seam allowance slightly, then turn the bow right side out.

Push out the seams and press the bow flat. Sew the opening closed with a blind stitch.

9. Add the final touch

Thread the bow through the zipper slider and tie it in place. 🎀

And that's it! Your box pencil case is finished!
