Looking for an easy and practical sewing project? In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to make a beautiful DIY pencil casewith a zipper and lining. This project is beginner-friendly, quick to sew, and perfect for school, work, or as a handmade gift.
This step-by-step guide will walk you through everything — from fusing the interfacing to installing the zipper and finishing the lining neatly.
Materials You Will Need
Outer fabric
Lining fabric
Zipper
Fusible fleece (or batting)
Matching thread
Sewing machine
Zipper foot
Pins or clips
Iron
Step 1: Prepare the Fabric
Cut all your pieces according to the free sewing pattern.
If you are using fusible fleece, fuse it to the wrong side of the outer fabric using an iron. This will give your pencil case structure and durability.
Step 2: Attach the Zipper
Place the zipper face down on the right side of the outer fabric.Lay the lining fabric on top, right sides together, and pin or clip in place.
Sew along the edge using a zipper foot.
Repeat the same steps for the other side of the zipper.
For a clean and professional look, topstitch along both sides of the zipper.
Step 3: Assemble the Pencil Case
Open the zipper halfway (this is important for turning later!).
Place the outer fabrics right sides together and the lining fabrics right sides together.
Line up the zipper ends and seams carefully. Use clips or pins to secure everything.
Make sure to leave an opening at the bottom of the lining fabric for turning. Also, do not sew over any areas marked in the pattern (if applicable).
Sew all the way around using a 0.7 cm seam allowance.
Step 4: Box the Corners (If Your Pattern Includes This)
Match the small corner openings, aligning the seam allowances, and sew across with a 0.7 cm seam allowance. This creates depth and gives your pencil case a nice shape.
Step 5: Turn and Finish
Once everything is sewn, turn the pencil case right side out through the opening in the lining.
Gently poke out the corners so they are nice and sharp.
Finally, sew the lining opening closed. You can stitch it by machine or use an invisible hand stitch for a cleaner finish.
Push the lining inside, zip it up — and your pencil case is complete!
